OMEGA Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary: A watch of science and imagination
Many may wonder how Snoopy, the sleepy dog, became associated with Omega and NASA. We have to go back to 1968, when NASA created an award for individuals who helped ensure the success of moon missions in any way they deemed valuable. This award was the Silver Snoopy Award, a cute silver Snoopy pin. Omega received this honor for its role in helping the Apollo 13 astronauts return home safely after an in-flight emergency. This is how these three best friends came to be.
Given the significance of this event and their strong relationship, the Omega Speedmaster special editions of 2003 and 2015 were born, becoming high-value collector's items sought after to this day. In 2020, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of receiving the Silver Snoopy Award, the brand once again produced a special OMEGA Speedmaster, but unlike previous models, this one is not a limited edition.
The Speedmaster features a vibrant dial with a clean white and blue theme, using the same sterling silver material found in the Snoopy pin, along with the collection's signature sub-dial arrangement.
The blue ceramic bezel ring features an enamel tachymeter scale, using the same scale style as the early Speedmasters. For true collectors who identify models by the marker at the 90 position, this anniversary edition features the "Dot Over Ninety," reverting from the "Dot Next to Ninety" used in more recent years.
The star of the show, Snoopy, is placed on the sub-dial with a 50th-anniversary emblem. The biggest highlight is on the back: when you activate the chronograph, Snoopy appears in his command module, traveling from Earth to the moon—based on real lunar imagery—before disappearing behind the moon and reappearing.
Another important detail is hidden on the inside of the beautiful nylon strap. If you flip it over, you will see the trajectory of the Apollo 13 mission over 5 days, 22 hours, 54 minutes, and 41 seconds, from departure to a safe return. The date of the award is engraved on the caseback, which uses a Naiad Lock system to ensure that all text remains perfectly aligned.
