Rolex GMT-Master: A timepiece and a "portal" that connects us to every time zone on Earth.
One watch that has been most harmoniously tied to people traveling the world for 70 years is the Rolex GMT-Master.
A watch that doesn't just tell time... but tells the “world you are in” along with the world you left behind.
It is a watch for pilots, yet it became famous among business people, actors, Hollywood stars, and world leaders alike.
The Beginning: The Pioneering GMT-Master
Rolex GMT-Master REF. 6542 (1954-1959)
This is the origin of the entire GMT-Master family, born from a collaboration between Rolex and Pan Am airlines. Because intercontinental flight was booming in the 1950s, pilots faced the problem of calculating "local" and "GMT" time simultaneously. Rolex therefore designed a watch that could display two time zones in one timepiece.
-
Bakelite bezel with red-blue Pepsi colors (red for daytime, blue for nighttime).
-
Embedded with Radium luminous numbers, a cutting-edge innovation.
-
Bakelite was fragile and Radium was hazardous to health, so Rolex had to switch to an aluminum bezel. But even if hazardous, it became a rare item to hunt for.
-
Became truly iconic when the REF. 6542 appeared on the wrist of Pussy Galore in the film James Bond: Goldfinger (1964).
What makes the 6542 even rarer is “happenstance,” such as:
-
Tropical Dial: A black dial that has faded to brown due to sunlight; collectors are willing to pay because it is a unique characteristic of that specific timepiece.
- Gilt Dial: Gold lettering on a black background that provides an authentic vintage feel.

The Era of Fame
Rolex GMT-Master REF. 1675 (1959-1980)
“The image of the GMT” that many people think of immediately when the model name is mentioned. So popular that it remained on the market for nearly 20 years.
Key Features
-
The first model with a large arrow 24-hour hand, making the second time zone easier to read.
-
The Pepsi bezel became an all-time icon.
-
Having been on the wrists of Che Guevara and Clint Eastwood, it became a symbol of the post-WWII era when people started looking for new paths in life.
Materials
-
Steel: A genuine model for Pan Am pilots.
-
Two-Tone Steel/Gold: Looks sportier and more luxurious.
-
Yellow Gold: Denotes “status,” comes with a Nipple Dial, featuring classic raised gold hour markers, which today has become a rare dial for collectors.
Mistakes that became charms
-
Spider Dial: The lacquer dial cracks into lines due to age and heat. Initially considered a flaw, it is now a vintage charm that signifies every piece is “unique.”

Evolution to a New Era
Rolex GMT-Master REF. 16750 (1980-1988)
This is the bridge between vintage and modern, using Cal. 3075, which features a Quickset Date, allowing the date to be set directly without having to rotate the hour hand through full cycles.
Points of interest
-
The first model to achieve 100-meter water resistance, up from the original 50 meters.
-
Produced dials in both Matte Dial (white lettering on matte black) and Glossy Dial (black with white gold-surround luminous markers); collectors have fan bases for each style.
Rare items
-
Tropical Dial: Color faded to a beautiful golden-brown.
-
Some timepieces have patina that turned creamy or orange, providing a unique charm.

Transition to the GMT-Master II
Rolex GMT-Master II REF. 16760 “Fat Lady” (1983-1988)
This was the first GMT-Master II model and earned the nickname “Fat Lady” because the case was thicker than previous models to accommodate the new Cal. 3085 movement.
Changes
-
For the first time, it was possible to adjust the hour hand independently. While the 24-hour hand still indicated GMT, the main hour hand could be moved in one-hour increments when crossing time zones. This was much more convenient than the previous era, where the GMT hand was always “locked” to the hour hand.
-
This allowed three time zones to be read simultaneously using the main hand, the GMT hand, and the bezel, depending on which one was used to set local time or another time zone.
-
Produced only in Steel.
-
Came with the first red-black Coke bezel in GMT history.

Classic GMT-Master II Era
Rolex GMT-Master II REF. 16710 (1989-2007)
This is a GMT that lasted over 15 years and gained immense popularity.
Key Features
-
The case was slimmer than the Fat Lady, making it comfortable to wear.
-
The bezel insert was available in Pepsi, Coke, and All-Black options.
Special dials for collecting
-
Stick Dial: The “II” on the dial is written as thin straight lines, not full Roman numerals.
-
Swiss Only / Swiss Made T<25: This was the final era of “Swiss Only” and “T<25” dials, which appeared sporadically, just as “Swiss Made” began to be used on some timepieces.

Entering the Cerachrom Era
Rolex GMT-Master II REF. 116710LN (2007-2018)

New features
-
A sturdier Oyster case with a thicker Crown Guard.
-
Oyster bracelet with an easily adjustable Oysterlock clasp.
-
Green hand contrasting against the black bezel became a very cool, modern look, reinforcing Rolex’s mastery of the color green.
-
Fully entering the “Swiss Made” era.

Rolex GMT-Master II REF. 126710BLRO “Pepsi” (2018-present)
The return of the Pepsi bezel in a ceramic version marks the “resurrection of a legend” after a long absence.
-
Comes with a Jubilee bracelet, giving it a vintage, retro look and a softer feel.
-
Uses the Cal. 3285 movement with a Chronergy escapement and a 70-hour power reserve.
-
The two-tone ceramic bezel (red-blue) is what fans have been waiting for.

Rolex GMT-Master II REF. 126710BLNR “Batman / Batgirl” (2019-present)
-
The black-blue bezel with an Oyster bracelet is nicknamed Batman, but with a Jubilee bracelet, it is Batgirl because it is softer.

-

Over the past 70 years, the Rolex GMT-Master and GMT-Master II have evolved beyond mere pilot's watches; they are symbols of travel, the changing of eras, and the advancement of Rolex technology.
-
From fragile Bakelite bezels to durable Cerachrom.
-
From a GMT hand “locked” to the hour hand to an independently adjustable hour hand.
-
From vintage movements to the more energy-efficient and robust Chronergy escapement.
And importantly, every flaw from the past—whether it be Tropical dials, Spider dials, or Stick dials—has transformed into a charming story that collectors value, making the GMT-Master not just a watch, but a piece of wearable history.
The GMT-Master is not just a timepiece; it is a travel companion and a memory of “the time you were there.”
It is a lesson for travelers who know that every minute in life… “is always precious.”
