Santos de Cartier (Call me by my name)
If you had to write a report on airplanes, the Wright brothers would be at the top of the search results and are well-known to all. However, in the annals of history, Alberto Santos-Dumont is equally significant. He produced a fixed-wing aircraft, and during his life in France, he knew many whom we would call "celebrities" in various circles today, such as Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the iconic landmark for tourists, the Eiffel Tower, or the person we will mention next, Louis-François Cartier, the manufacturer of the world's leading jewelry.
Alberto Santos Dumont is considered the person directly responsible for the Santos de Cartier watch being on so many wrists today. In the past, wristwatches were considered more of a women's accessory, leading gentlemen to rely on pocket watches. However, this was not the case for Alberto Santos Dumont, as it proved a major hindrance to checking the time while flying his aircraft. His dear friend, Louis-François Cartier, seemed like the perfect solution for creating a watch specifically for a pilot like him. This design, which showed a deep understanding of the wearer's needs, significantly changed the attitude toward men wearing watches.
With its unique square shape and Roman numeral indices, and a date display at the 6 o'clock position, the simple design from 1904 remains highly desirable even today. The sizes are easily categorized as S/M/L/XL, measuring 38x27.5 / 35.1 / 39.8 / 43.3 mm respectively. Currently, Cartier has developed a bracelet system that allows the wearer to change straps by themselves, using the Cartier QuickSwitch system.
