Watch 101: Unlocking the Secret, A Deep Dive into Watch ‘Lugs’ – What Are They?

What are Watch Lugs? Why watch enthusiasts need to know

‘Watches’ are among the most popular accessories. Beyond their primary function of telling time, they enhance the wearer’s image and personality. But did you know that this accessory actually has incredibly complex mechanisms and details, ranging from external aesthetics to the internal mechanical design filled with technical engineering?

Beautiful designs that convey the identity of each watch are composed of various parts and components, resulting in perfect harmony. One of the most essential parts that connects the watch case to the strap is the ‘lugs.’ Many people may be familiar with them, and today, this component comes in a variety of styles designed for specific purposes to suit each watch. In this article, we will take all watch lovers on an in-depth exploration of this part.

Getting to know Watch Lugs

Watch Lugs are a part of a timepiece that acts as the connector between the case and the strap, holding both components together. Generally, a metal spring bar, also known as a watch pin, is used for attachment. Furthermore, they are the key part that helps define the image and identity of a watch. From the past to the present, the design of these parts has been developed countless times to align with the tastes of people in different eras.

Times change, and so does everything else, including watch lug designs. As trends shift over time, it is no surprise that design styles are continuously developed to integrate perfectly and more modernly with the aesthetics of the case and strap. However, vintage designs remain popular among watch enthusiasts for their exquisite, timeless beauty that makes them worthy of collection.

While no one can say exactly how many total designs exist, they can be primarily categorized as follows:

Explorer Lugs

These lugs take their name and inspiration from the Rolex Explorer. As seen in the design of the Rolex Explorer, the base of the lug (the part attached to the case) is wide before tapering toward the end, with the lug line angled at a slant from the widest part of the case. They are considered a very popular lug shape found quite commonly.

Speedy or Bombe Lugs

Speedy or Bombe Lugs are one of the most common types, which gained popularity in the early 1960s following the success of the OMEGA Speedmaster. Later, this design was widely adopted by many brands, becoming a classic prototype. The shape is similar to Explorer lugs, but the outer edge is chamfered, creating a beautiful angular bevel that gives a twisted appearance. For this reason, some people refer to them as "Twisted" lugs due to these visible lines and angles.

Straight Lugs

As the name suggests, these lugs feature a straight, tapered design. Focused on a geometric, angular style, they appear modern, versatile, and suitable for all ages. The thickness of the lugs depends on the specific structure of each watch. If you like this style, you can look for watches from brands like Daniel Wellington, NOMOS, and Tangente.

Shrouded or Hooded Lugs

This is a somewhat special, distinct design that is not commonly found. Importantly, it retains a vintage flair that perfectly preserves the charm of the watch. This style features a single horizontal bar attached to the watch case, creating a unique identity. Today, this can still be found in some current Seiko models.

Teardrop Lugs

The ultimate lug design for vintage-style watches, the Teardrop Lugs are shaped like a water drop, giving the watch a prestigious look. This design is frequently used by leading brands such as IWC, Rolex, Ulysse Nardin, Patek Philippe, and many others.

Cushion Lugs

Another notable style is the Cushion Lugs. These have a unique design and are relatively rare, as they were extremely popular on vintage dive watches in the past.

Crab Claw Lugs

Finally, the "Crab Claw" lugs, often found on vintage watches, feature a distinctive, iconic design reminiscent of a crab's claw. The curve leaves a visible space between the watch case and the strap, distinguishing this style from standard watch pins.

If you are looking for a watch with the right lug design that matches your style, Pixiu Watch has a variety of models for you to choose from. We have curated a selection of authentic second-hand luxury watches from various brands at friendly prices, ready to offer you a wide range of designs.
