Timeless Classic: The Journey of Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches
Dating back to 1833, before it became the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand, Antoine LeCoultre opened a watchmaking workshop in the village of Le Sentier in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. He successfully invented a machine to cut watch components, and seven years later, he created the “Millionometer,” a device capable of measuring parts to the micron. This invention earned him recognition at the Universal Exhibition in London for the Lever-Winding system, along with a Gold Medal for his Crafted Gold Chronometer.
Later, in 1866, Elie LeCoultre, son of Antoine, founded LeCoultre & Cie., gathering over 500 skilled watchmakers. Within four years, he created the “Pocket Watch With Triple Calendar And Moon Phases,” followed by more than 350 calibers, including 128 chronographs and 99 minute repeaters. During this 30-year period (1833–1866), LeCoultre manufactured nearly all movements for Patek Philippe and almost all movements for the prestigious "Holy Trinity" brands.
In 1903, Jacques-David LeCoultre, grandson of Antoine, met Parisian watchmaker Edmond Jaeger. After accepting a challenge to produce the world’s thinnest pocket watch—resulting in the LeCoultre 146 caliber, which measured only 1.38 mm thick—the two began collaborating and eventually merged their companies under the name Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC).
From the past to the present, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains timelessly popular. Collectors trust the brand for its high performance; every Jaeger-LeCoultre watch undergoes over 1,000 hours of testing before sale to ensure the highest quality, covering chronometric precision, shock resistance, environmental tolerance, water resistance, and even strap durability.
