Panerai began as a small watch shop and workshop in Florence, Italy. In 1860, Giovanni Panerai established a watch shop named Orologeria G.Panerai&Co. With his expertise in watchmaking and repairs, Giovanni’s shop became highly renowned within the Italian watch industry.

In 1890, Guido Panerai renamed the shop Orologeria Svizzera and became a distributor for prominent Swiss watch brands, including Rolex, Vacheron, Longines, and Patek Philippe. The business expanded into mechanical instruments, which served as a turning point that established Panerai's connection with the Italian Navy, known as the Marina Militare.

In 1936, the Navy sought a watch for divers or frogmen. Panerai created the first Radiomir model, utilizing a movement, crown, and case back from Rolex. Two years later, Panerai produced the Luminor, which featured a signature crown-protecting bridge, and officially began supplying watches to the Italian Navy.
