A.Lange & Sohne Lange 1, or L1—a watch name with a visionary face where the hours and seconds are separated is nothing new. However, what is unusual is its positioning; it does not reference the center of the dial, but rather places the hour circle, the seconds, and the date window in an isosceles triangle configuration. Added to this are the double-window date that is three times larger than usual and a power reserve indicator. It sounds like a lot, and it is surprising that everything is laid out on a 38mm dial, yet it remains airy and comfortable to the eye, not cluttered or overwhelming. This visionary look has remained in production to this day—timeless, isn't it?

To reaffirm the excellence of A. Lange, every part of the manual-winding movement that Lange equips in the A. Lange L1 is fully decorated, even in areas invisible to the wearer. The 3/4 plate is finished with an array of advanced patterns. The rubies are not simply set against the movement in a mundane fashion but are held in gold chatons, which makes them less prone to cracking—a task that is becoming increasingly rare as it is a form of ancient craftsmanship. The large yet beautiful balance wheel, which has been intricately engraved, is showcased on the back of the A. Lange L1 through a sapphire crystal. All of these factors speak volumes about the commitment to excellence in watchmaking at A. Lange & Sohne.
