A.Lange & Söhne EP.1 Passion
A Sculptural Work of Time Born from Passion, with True German Devotion
Mr. Anthony de Haas, Director of Product Development
“ Passion, and not high-end watchmaking, German high-end watching “ (From “Walkthrough Famous German Watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne” on Youtube by TheWATCHES.tv)
“Passion” is the first word from the executive of A. Lange & Söhne after being asked how he would define the essence of A. Lange. With watches that appear open, dials lacking complex arrangements, and time-telling hands placed in different locations—each with its own sub-dial scattered across the circular face—they look unique... but that is not enough to satisfy the “Passion” of the artisans at the Lange factory. What follows next, however, truly embodies the “Passion” of Lange.
Handwerkskunst : Engraving with Passion
Artisans at A. Lange must possess extreme patience to polish various components. Some parts require no less than two hours of manual polishing with abrasive paper to achieve a mirror-like finish. Furthermore, only six artisans are capable of performing the floral-pattern engraving on the balance cock, and because it is done by hand, every piece is unique. Moreover, if a watch is brought to a Lange engraver, they can immediately identify who performed the engraving on that specific piece. These are what Lange calls Handwerkskunst, or Hand-Craftsmanship watches.

Cotes de Geneva or Geneva Stripe is a cross-grain polishing technique

Even tiny components are polished

Mirror polish or Flat polish is the process of making the surface as clear as a mirror, requiring at least 2 hours of polishing on abrasive paper.

Polishing even in curved nooks and crannies. Sharp angles require the skill and experience of a craftsman, as machines cannot polish sharp corners.
The signature floral engraving of A. Lange found on the back of premium Lange watches, such as the L1, 1815, etc.

The commitment to Lange's Handwerkskunst is further reinforced by a special themed engraving project in Florence, which showcased case engraving. Only 20 pieces were produced, despite high demand, because the success rate of work meeting A. Lange’s standards is only 5:1, and only a handful of artisans are capable of this task, limiting production.
