Article: "Sorry, Isaac!"

"Sorry, Isaac!"
“1801”, a special number in the world of time: the beginning of a history, an evolution, and a tribute to defying Isaac Newton's law of nature, the Breguet way
When a short phrase like "Sorry, Isaac!" is not just a playful greeting to the scientist who discovered the law of gravity, but a declaration of a great mechanical victory in fine watchmaking (Haute Horlogerie)

The beginning of history
In the era when pocket watches sat vertically in a waistcoat pocket and were affected by the Earth's gravity, their accuracy drifted.
Abraham-Louis Breguet therefore invented a way to cancel out the effects of gravity, the "Tourbillon", which was officially patented on 7 Messidor an 9, corresponding to 26 June 1801 in the French Revolutionary calendar

Understanding the 1801 tourbillon patent: When a watch is upright, gravity affects its most vital parts, the balance wheel and hairspring, shifting the hairspring's center of gravity, making friction on the pivots uneven and causing lubricant to pool to one side. The result is that the watch runs "fast" or "slow".
So how did Breguet solve this problem?
Instead of trying to stop gravity, Breguet chose to "balance it through rotation", as follows:
-
Place the entire regulating organ (balance wheel, hairspring and escapement) inside a rotating cage.
-
Design the cage to make a full 360-degree turn every minute.
-
As the cage keeps turning, the rate error that runs "fast" in one position is automatically offset by the error that runs "slow" in another.

To make it easier to understand, imagine: an acrobat constantly spinning on a rope or a ball, who may tilt left or right yet keeps a steady, continuous rotation. Or think of a simple average: if you lean left for half a minute, then lean right for half a minute, your average position over that minute returns to the center. That is the heart of the tourbillon, which gives a watch its highest precision.

In addition, he invented the Breguet overcoil, bending the outer end of the hairspring up and toward the center to reduce the shift of its center of gravity, so the hairspring expands and contracts concentrically. This makes the balance wheel and the movement's frequency even more stable.
A commemorative timepiece: Breguet Classique Grande Complication REF. 1801
For the 200th anniversary of the patent in 2001, under the leadership of Nicolas G. Hayek, Breguet held a grand celebration at the Palace of Versailles with the historic Breguet Classique Grande Complication REF. 1801, available in both limited and regular editions.

Why collectors and mechanism lovers care
-
REF. 1801 uses a classic pocket-watch design with a hand-guilloché demi-savonnette cover. Closed, only a small aperture shows the time; when the wearer presses the pusher on the crown, the cover springs open to reveal the splendor of the tourbillon cage, a truly personal pleasure for the owner.
-
Masterpiece engraving: The back of the Calibre 557T/558T is beautifully hand-engraved with Rococo floral motifs and the historic inscription "Brevet du 7 Messidor an 9" (the patent date in the French Revolutionary calendar, corresponding to 26 June 1801)

Why do today's collectors still love REF. 1801 more than 25 years later?
Because the demi-savonnette creates an "open the cover and wow" experience, like opening your own treasure box that does more than tell time.
It tells a story: every time you press the pusher, you connect yourself to 225 years of Haute Horlogerie history.
In an era when people value storytelling and craftsmanship more than complications alone, REF. 1801 is one of Breguet's most "precious" timepieces.
The evolution of Breguet's tourbillon after the patent
After receiving the patent, Breguet made only 35–40 tourbillon watches before this legendary mechanism lay dormant for decades. It returned gracefully on the wrist during the brand's revival in the late 1980s, under Daniel Roth and developed from the Nouvelle Lemania base, which was later fully integrated into Manufacture Breguet.
Here is the notable tourbillon lineage, based on reliable official information, in order of development:

1) Calibre 558 / 557T, carrying the direct DNA after the patent, and its successor, the Calibre 187 series
The REF. 3350 of 1989 was Breguet's first tourbillon wristwatch, powered by the manual-winding Calibre 558, with a one-minute tourbillon cage, 2.5 Hz (18,000 vph), about 50 hours of power reserve, and usually a seconds hand on the tourbillon cage.
Meanwhile, Calibre 557 / 557T
was used for the patent's 200th anniversary in the special Breguet Classique Grande Complication 1801 (Tourbillon à Versailles) of 2001/2002, keeping the spirit and core structure of the same lineage.

Today it has moved on to a new heir, Calibre 187B, an upgraded Cal. 558 with about 41% of parts changed, improved magnetic resistance from a silicon escapement and Nivachron balance spring, and power reserve increased to about 60 hours, still at 2.5 Hz. A notable model is the Classique Tourbillon 7357 (in platinum and Breguet Gold), the direct heir to REF. 3350.
And Calibre 187M1, developed for a flying tourbillon with a Mysterious Display that makes the cage appear to float mysteriously in mid-air. A notable model is the Classique Tourbillon Sideral 7255 (limited edition), a tourbillon watch that is “Breguet's first flying tourbillon”

2) Calibre 581 series
2014 marked a major leap to the extra-thin automatic tourbillon, about 3 mm thick, with a titanium cage, silicon balance spring and silicon escapement, 4 Hz (28,800 vph), and up to about 80 hours of power reserve.

A standout is Cal. 581DPE, with a perpetual calendar module and running equation of time.
Notable models with this movement series are
-
Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat 5377 and 5367
-
Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887 (limited to 25 pieces in the 225th-anniversary version, with a sky dial matching 26 June 1801)

3) Calibre 569 / 569T
A manual-winding movement combining a tourbillon with a Fusee-and-Chain system, which delivers consistent torque to the gear train and tourbillon cage even as the mainspring runs down, using a titanium tourbillon cage with a silicon Breguet-overcoil balance spring, 2.5 Hz and about 50–55 hours of power reserve. A notable model is the “Tradition Tourbillon 7047”.
