Royal Oak Offshore The Challenger Epilogue: The Legend of the Challengers

And so we reach the conclusion with the beast beloved by people all over the world. Ever since the day the Offshore was launched, it has shattered conventions, from its case size to deviating from the legendary Royal Oak design that generated massive sales. Most charming of all, and what led to a major awakening in the world of horology, is the Mix & Match of various materials. Let’s take a look at how unconventional and unique it is together.

Steel isn't just for sports—let's end it with our generation!!!
At that time, materials used for watches were limited: stainless steel for sports watches and gold for dress watches only. But the Offshore didn't care; it forged ahead to create differences according to the designers' imagination and the direction it wanted to take. AP sent out the heaviest and the lightest Offshores, the next two beasts that followed to stir up the world.

The Lightest
Royal Oak Offshore Ref. 25721TI is the yin-yang twin to the platinum version. With its ultra-light titanium weight, if you look closely at the dial, the use of two-tone colors between the dial surface and the sub-dials was the starting point for dial design. AP used this titanium beast as a stepping stone, introducing new designs that would be used in the future, eventually becoming the source of all-time favorite dials like Navy Blue, Panda, and Safari, which many other brands have since adopted.

The origins of the popular Panda and Navy Blue dials currently seen today actually come from this beast.

Sports isn't just about steel
The Royal Oak Offshore Ref. 25721BA, with its all-gold case that matches beautifully with dark dials, was called “The Beauty,” standing alongside The Beast. This model was the first in the production line to use such materials, serving as a declaration that the Offshore was not just a sports watch, but a collection where anything could happen with subsequent models. Please, do not try to limit the value or box in the Offshore!!!

The Beauty is also known as “The Pounder” due to its significant weight. Once again, AP experimented with matching various case materials and dials, which was highly unconventional at the time. This includes the champagne dial on a gold case, and another extremely rare piece that, to this day, has only appeared on the market four times: a steel case with a Rose Gold bezel and a blue dial.

Handsome, wealthy, cool, and classic: The new definition of sporty
The Royal Oak Offshore Ref. 25854BC was the next model that completely changed the image of the Offshore's endless possibilities and the definition of a sports watch at that time. While we see Perpetual Calendars everywhere today, seeing this function in a watch classified as a sports watch back in 1997 was truly revolutionary. And of course, AP, now having fun and ignoring the critics, placed this Perpetual Calendar—or QP for short—into various cases, including steel and other materials, once again without a care in the world.

A chic, vibrant, Aloha-Hawaii beast

The final collection that collectors consider the rarest set for The Beast: a fashionable, multi-colored beast. If you want the complete set, you need to collect all 8 colors. The special feature of this set is that it was the vanguard in breaking the mold of using steel bracelets on sports watches. AP introduced leather straps for the first time, and they were in various colors to match the dials—not just simple black leather. Many of the rubber and fabric straps we see today all stem from the unconventional nature of this beast.

Ultimately, the DNA remains
Evolving something already considered perfect into something equally good but from a different perspective is incredibly difficult. Even though the late Genta, whom I love, might have rejected this descendant, I bow down to AP's vision and design in presenting the Royal Oak DNA in a way that is different yet maintains all its original integrity. It is proven when we encounter The Beast in any form—whether from diverse materials, colorful dials, or even non-metal watch straps—we instantly recognize it, exclaiming, “An AP watch,” “Royal Oak,” or “Offshore.” So, does that still count as being unconventional, Grandpa?

The descendants of The Beast that we see and are very familiar with today.
