Review: IWC Tribute to Pallweber 150th Anniversary

Back in December 2017, IWC launched 4 watch models, one of which was the compelling IWC Tribute to Pallweber. It is a standalone timepiece not included in any existing collection, created specifically for IWC's 150th anniversary.

The Tribute to Pallweber is a unique, vintage-style watch—not merely from the 1960s, but based on the design of the distinctive pocket watches produced by IWC using the Pallweber system in 1884. This digital display for both hours and minutes, which was developed in 1884 and pioneered by Josef Pallweber, was very well received.

Although this modern timepiece is a wristwatch, it retains the vintage charm of the famous pocket watches created by Josef Pallweber. It is truly a vintage-inspired piece. The large case (45 mm in diameter) is shaped like a pocket watch with added lugs, a design that makes it easy to wear and suitable for any occasion.

The dial displays time in three sections: the hour indication at the top, the minute indication in the middle, and the small seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock, all centered on the dial just like the original Pallweber pocket watches. The dial is finished with a lacquered coating, creating a beautiful, smooth surface that reflects light to provide great depth.

Regarding the movement, this piece features the newly developed IWC-manufactured 94200 calibre. The hour and minute discs do not transition slowly; instead, they jump instantly. This requires a significant amount of energy, yet the watch still provides a power reserve of 60 hours.

Overall, the IWC Tribute to Pallweber Edition "150 Years" is one of the best watches in the brand's recent collections. It is unique, and this particular version, featuring a blue dial, is arguably the most beautiful of them all.
